Welcome!

Thank you for visiting our website. I hope that you’ll find the information that you are looking for and that the website provides you with a flavour of life at our school.

Ermysted’s is one of England’s oldest schools and for over 530 years the school has sought to provide a first class education to the boys of Skipton and the surrounding areas, regardless of their background. Much has changed since its foundation in the fifteenth century, but the school has never wavered from William Ermysted’s original ambition to develop ‘learned and wise men’ and individuals of virtue.

Academic success is important but so is the development of character, resilience and self-confidence. At Ermysted’s we take the development of the whole person seriously. The school prides itself on its nurturing and inclusive community, and we work hard to create an environment where every pupil feels valued and supported to achieve their very best.

Opportunities abound in our extensive programme of extra-curricular activities, with pupils actively encouraged to broaden their personal interests, develop new skills and pursue a healthy lifestyle. From the rugby field to the stage, from the concert hall to the debating chamber, our pupils commit themselves fully to the pursuit of excellence and develop the social and personal skills that will serve them so well in later life.

I feel very privileged to be the Headmaster of such a distinguished and ancient institution and incredibly proud of the pupils’ achievements and abilities. But don’t take my word for it, come and visit us to meet the staff and pupils and discover for yourself. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

Michael Evans
Headmaster

“Pupils do not attend Ermysted’s, they discover a stimulating world and remain forever.

Our group of GCSE Astronomers had the privilege of meeting Councillor Winston Feather yesterday. Councillor Feather, who previously served as a navigator in the merchant navy, kindly volunteered his time to deliver a fascinating talk on the challenges of navigating at sea before the days of GPS. Students were captivated by his stories of life at sea and the skill involved in using traditional instruments.

The photograph shows one of our students trying out Councillor Feather’s own sextant — the most important tool a navigator can possess.

A huge thank you to Councillor Feather for an inspiring and memorable session! 🌟🧭✨

🌟 Rotary Technology Tournament Success! 🌟

Pupils had a fantastic day competing in the Rotary Technology Tournament yesterday at Gargrave Village Hall. We’re incredibly proud of their achievements and teamwork throughout the event.

👏 Huge congratulations to:
Ermysted’s Year 9 team — Winners of Best Portfolio!
Ermysted’s Year 12 team — 3rd Place Overall!

It was a very close competition with impressively high standards from all the schools involved. A special mention as well to our D&T Year 12's from Skipton Girls' High School, who also won Best Portfolio in the KS5 category.

Well done to everyone who took part — a brilliant day of creativity, engineering, and problem‑solving. 🔧📐✨

Great first outing for our brand‑new chess sets and clocks as we hosted Ilkley GS yesterday! We played three rounds against their three teams, with every match tightly contested and played in brilliant spirit.

Ermysted’s A and B teams finished joint top with identical records, while our C team came a close third. Huge congrats to Joe, Sevan, Tom, Alex and Uzair for winning all three of their games.

A massive thank you to the many generous parents and friends who helped us raise over £1,000—enough to buy more than 50 chess clocks and sets. This means we can run our tournaments independently and possibly even host an invitational for local primary schools.

Well done to everyone who played, and roll on next week’s big tournament! ♟️🎉

Despite the recent spell of terrible weather, our GCSE Astronomy students have finally been able to use the school observatory and capture some fantastic images of the moon and Jupiter. This photo—created after stacking and processing—shows the moon’s southern highlands, a region still heavily cratered due to the lack of recent volcanic activity or lava flows. Amazing work from our young astronomers!

Our Japan Club has enjoyed some fun and fascinating new year activities so far in 2026! Everyone picked a kanji (Japanese character) to represent their experience of 2025 and practised writing this with a calligraphy brush in ink. Choices included the kanji for words such as: Japan, dog, money, sun and... chicken! The boys also considered how their understanding of Japan is evolving, and played number bingo. Taught by Mrs Villalobos and Yatsuda-sensei, Ermysted's Japan Club is made possible by a grant from The Japan Foundation 国際交流基金, London. ... See MoreSee Less
