The enthusiasm and passion of the keen readers at Ermysted’s Grammar school has been recognised and rewarded by organisers of the national literary award, the Carnegie Medal. The school has been selected as the ‘Carnegie Shadowing Champion’ for the Yorkshire and Humber Region. National Co-ordinator Amy McKay stated that the Ermysted’s reading group “most perfectly demonstrates a passion and excitement for the Awards.”

With over 80 pupils from Years 7-9 taking part each year, Ermysted’s is one of the largest and most pro-active Carnegie groups in the region. The Scheme contributes significantly to the school’s strong reading culture and is supported by parents and staff.

Shadowing is a national activity. Thousands of schools take part by running reading groups where pupils shadow the role of the national judges and debate which book should win the medal. This year’s Carnegie kicks off on the 19 March when the 8 shortlisted books will be announced. Readers will have until June to complete the challenge, with competitions, rewards and activities
along the way. The achievements of Ermysted’s readers will then be celebrated at the annual Carnegie lunch.

“This will be my third Carnegie” said Year 9 pupil, Nathaniel Smith, “I love it. It’s really fun and it takes you out of your comfort zone. I would definitely recommend it to the younger pupils”.
